Use Social Media the Right Way for a Safer Net

Penang, 20 December 2021-NETHICS is bringing you our first webinar, TalkSpace, this coming 29th December 2021. TalkSpace will start at 8 pm until 10.30 pm through the Webex platform to raise awareness among social media users about the potential consequences of cyberbullying as a result of poor social media etiquette. It is a sharing session with our invited guests who will share their perspectives on cyberbullying, as well as why they advocate for it. The invited guests for TalkSpace are Miss Narvinni Jayakumar, a fresh graduate of BSc Psychology(Hons) from HELP University and Miss Jessie Yong Tse Shing, a Chinese language teacher and also a Master holder in Journalism.

NETHICS is an online social cause campaign that is organized by the Persuasive Communication final year students of the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The main objectives of this campaign is to promote proper social media etiquette, nurture a practice of professional personal branding online and in curbing cyber harassment issues among youth. According to The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) 2020, Malaysia ranks second place in Asia for cyberbullying among youth, with three out of every ten young Malaysians victims of cyberbullying. It shows that cyberbullying is becoming an increasingly evident problem among Malaysian youth due to the lack of awareness on social media etiquette. Due to these alarming statistics, the NETHICS team has taken it upon themselves to organize TalkSpace as a means to educate Malaysian youth on these important issues.

TalkSpace will be open to all the youths in Malaysia, those aged 15 to 30 years old as this webinar serves as a safe space for youth to open up and share their experiences and or opinions. This webinar is to provide emotional support to cyber harassment victims while also raising awareness about cyber harassment. Besides, through listening to real-life experiences, the audience will be able to learn the consequences of not practicing proper social media etiquette.

Moreover, this webinar is free of charge in order to inspire our audience to make a change and start practicing better social media etiquette. Participants can start to register via scanning the QR code in the poster below or visiting https://nethicsusm.wixsite.com/nethicsusm/talkspace.

As said by NETHICS Project Director and Vice Project Director, Larissa Lorelle Christian and Balqis Mohamed Ismail, “We wish that with the efforts of NETHICS, bullying in the cyber world would be addressed even more because sometimes it all just begins with teaching proper online etiquette. It is important for the victim to know that they are not alone but it is even more important for our society to understand that cyber bullying needs to stop.”

That being said, NETHICS welcomes all youths residing in Malaysia to participate in the NETHICS TalkSpace webinar. This is YOUR chance to play a part in ensuring a safer internet experience for all. We hope that this session will help to bridge the gap between social media users and the victims.
