Penang, 29th November 2021- The Persuasive Communication final year students of the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia are back with their brand new online campaign, NETHICS – an integration of the words ‘internet’ and ‘ethics’. Officially launched virtually on 24th November 2021, this campaign will be carried out until the 18th of January 2022 with lots of exciting events and competitions for youth all over Malaysia. In the recent years, social media has become a rather critical part in the lives of today’s youth. However, the digital channel is often misused due to the lack of social media etiquette or netiquette and lack of awareness on the digital footprint that people leave behind whilst using social media. Shockingly, Malaysia is also known to be showing an alarming number of cyber harassment issues among youth in the nation. This comes to show that the Malaysian youth are not fully equipped with the necessary knowledge or skill to ensure a safe and pleasant internet experience for all. Hence, living true to the campaigns’ slogan of ‘smarter words, safer net’, NETHICS aspires to create awareness and instill proper social media etiquette when conducting oneself online.
Particularly, NETHICS has carefully curated various activities and events in order to promote proper social media etiquette among the Malaysian youth. The events will be based on NETHICS’ three main causes which are netiquette in social media, cyber harassment and personal branding. Some of the main events include:
● ArtSpace Competition - A digital art competition aimed at exposing Malaysian youth to netiquette through creative expression
● AskNETHICS! - A sharing session by prominent social media influencers that highlights on the right use of social media
● TalkSpace - A webinar by advocates against cyber harassment issues to share their experiences and how they overcame it
● NETHICS WorkSpace- A workshop to educate youth on personal branding for professional digital footprint
● NETHICS or No-Ethics? - An AR game filter on NETHICS Official Instagram
There will also be a few more mini activities carried out on our social media platforms!
That being said, the NETHICS team warmly welcomes all Malaysian youth to participate in our campaign. As said by NETHICS Project Director and Vice Project Director, Larissa Lorelle Christian and Balqis Mohamed Ismail, “We can't do this without you! It may be a bumpy ride, but at least in the end we’ll know that with smarter words, comes a safer net.”
